We worked to get our due date into January to avoid missing any of the UF home games. Our one mistake was planning our wedding for late March without thinking that the '06 Gators would be making their run at our first basketball National Championship. Luckily the resort that we were staying at in Antigua had satellite TV so we could watch Joakim and the boys bring one home for the good guys. Much. Everything I've heard about the guy definitely makes him worth emulating, especially, for me personally, his unabashed faith.

My only beef with Tebow, after his youth, is that some 10-year old kid who Googles his name is greeted with a picture of Tebow with a random, well-endowed, frat girl. I know young boys are fond of boobies and all, but I'd prefer they take a back seat to the more admirable qualities to a figure boys respect. I know it's rather ultra-conservative to be bothered by that sort of thing, but if it's my son, I'd rather him learn more about his hero, not about the cup size of the girls hanging off his arm in college.

In any event, my choice, like the commenter before me, would be Albert Pujols. For my taste, the Pujols love-fest over the All Star break was a bit much, but I think you'd admit it paled in comparison to the adoration regularly lavished on Tebow. Anyway, Pujols has had longer to establish his historical place, which is probably not dissimilar to Tebow's at this point. (Consider: both could never play another game and still remain large figures in the history of their sports--perhaps Tebow even more so).

Still, I like that Pujols has been around longer and remained the type of man Tebow appears to be, even at such a young age. Also, as a bonus for me, he too shares my faith and by all accounts is a tremendous family man. (Oh, and when you Google Pujols, you get pictures of him actually playing his sport, which is nice, too.) My point is, the moral aspect of the athletes is important to me, personally, which makes me impressed by both Tebow and Pujols.

Thing is, though, my two kids are both girls, and I don't think I could tell you which female athlete I'd want them to admire. As a parent of 15,11 year old boys and 5 year old girl I am in all levels of the sports stages.

My 14 year old loves hoops and plays fantasy sports online. My 11 year old is into soccer - the sport I played through college - but will pretty much try anything. And my daughter played her first season of soccer, but always had to have here "socca-ball" ribbon on her ponytail.

But the accomplishment I am most proud of my 14 year old for is getting his blackbelt at age 11. He is a skinny, un-intimidating kid but I can tell he likes when a friend comes over to the house for the first time and sees the black belt hanging around the bedpost.

As far as "sports parents", I am always entertained by the parents who are dropping cash left and right for the 10 year old's "training" because they are looking for that scholarship. When he was five weeks old we took him to his first sporting event, his aunt's high school basketball game. He loved the sounds and following the action and had to be facing the court...but wasn't a big fan of the pep band and didn't sleep worth anything that night. (although at that time he wasn't a great sleeper anyway).

This spring when he was five months old we road tripped to Michigan for the DIII Women's Basketball Final Four. He was definitely overwhelmed when in the bigger, louder crowd (our team coached by a family member won the national title!) but was fine when watching from the concourse above the seating. We were also out late with the team celebrating, but he was fine and unaffected.

Baseball games worry me though as we want to take him to an I-Cubs game this summer, but I'm definitely apprehensive about foul balls. I can't imagine sitting behind the dugout with him. I'm not really comfortable sitting there with my wife, let alone a kid.
<link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' I would be honored to have my sons play for him. He teaches so many things that are priceless that so many parents and teachers are afraid to teach even though they have real world applications. Life is hard and you need to be tough to make it. Knight taught something that most people can't and was vilified for it. On the flip side anyone who worked or played for him are truly better for it.

I truly hope his legacy is one of a great man, teacher, and coach.

Having gone to school at Bobby Knight's first coac...

Having gone to school at Bobby Knight's first coaching stop, and seeing many of his players come back and talk to us about teamwork, and playing for the General, I would want nothing more than for my son to have a chance to play for him.

Bobby Knight created greatness in the most improbable place. Some people might think Coach K is his best product at Army. I am going to say it was Coach K's teammmate, Bob Foley, who won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam and became a 3-Star General. Those Army teams had basketball success, and more importantly are successful in life. His Indiana teams are the same way, if you discount Isiah I mean.....
